Welcome, my name is Amber Pyles and I have been a Registered Nurse for 14 years, but my first personal encounter with the health care system was when I became pregnant seven years ago. First with a miscarriage and then my subsequent pregnancy with my daughter, I experienced the multitude of shortcomings that exist in the healthcare system, from a patient's perspective, with my own eyes. Most of my physical needs were cared for, but my emotional and mental health needs remained unaddressed. After I gave birth to my daughter I suffered from severe postpartum depression and struggled for over a year to obtain effective treatment with remission of symptoms. Anxiety and depression are the most common complications of childbirth, but the profound lack of education, screening, prevention, and effective treatment remains the standard in most perinatal care. This is NOT okay. My experience set me on a journey to discover how to better support women during their transition into motherhood. I hope to transform my suffering into comfort and guidance for mothers during pregnancy and up to three years postpartum. I want to use my lived experience, nursing practice, and specialized training in evidence-based perinatal mental health support practices, to provide effective support for motherhood.
Let’s be real, every stage of the motherhood journey revolves primarily around the child, but what about YOU? During the transitional process surrounding childbirth a mother is born also. As soon as women try to conceive, become pregnant, experience a miscarriage, struggle with infertility, childbirth, infant or mother complications, and postpartum recovery the health care system offers sufficient physical treatment. A gap exists in between the physical components of care and the holistic aspects, which include the dynamic emotional needs during this transition. I want to close this gap and work with you to develop a postpartum motherhood wellness plan to provide a more comprehensive plan of care as you begin your new role. When working with moms the most common phrase I hear is, “Nobody told me.” Well, I want to not only tell you, but support you through the process to provide a more seamless entry into motherhood.
